Sutton-in-Ashfield is one of 40 WW2 cold stores. Those at Hexham and Loughborough were later converted into RGHQ’s and have now been demolished. The cold store at Llandudno Junction was considered for the RGHQ for North Wales but never used.
Sutton-in-Ashfield is an identical building and is still in use as a commercial cold store. It stands alongside the Leicester - Mansfield railway line. The rail connection from this line has been severed.
