RAF Tiree became operational in late 1941 to provide cover for Atlantic convoys and shipping in The Minch. Tiree was planned to be a Fighter Sector Station so had a Fighter Operations Block though there were never any fighters based there and the Fighter Operations Block is said to have never become operational, it was at Baugh which is to the East of the main airfield - NM 02280 44000. The building is now used by Tyrii Pottery.
There is also a GR Operations Block which was Building 501 in R9 Section G at Crossapol - NL 99556 44486. This is suggested as being General Reconnaissance and controlling anti-submarine patrols and perhaps the Meteorological flights. The building is now Skinner’s Shop.
In August 1944, two Halifaxes collided over the airfield with loss of both crews.
