The biggest piece of engineering on the Davington Light Railway that connected the workers houses of Davington with the extensive gunpowder works at Uplees. The line and tunnel were in use from 1916 to the end of The Great War. During WW2 the tunnel was repurposed as an air raid shelter, with both ends bricked up save for an entrance in each. These walls were removed after the war.
The tunnel was single track and built with four refuges, two on each side. The date of building (1916) can be seen above the portal.
The tunnel seems structurally sound (it goes under a rather quiet road). There is a lot of graffiti. When visited, it was very dry, although Kent was in an extended period of drought at the time.
