The island of Öja to the south of Stockholm houses a coastal artillery fort. It is part of the defences that protected the country’s capital Stockholm, the current installation dating from 1970.
The support facilities are all excavated within the granite rock and it was designed to be operated in ‘lock down’ for up to a month. The artillery was 12cmm Bofors-designed guns. Access to the fort is sometimes possible on certain dates and by prior arrangement.
