The island of Hemsö has two Cold War Artillery Batteries. The smaller of these was constructed between 1961 and 1963 and was named Havstoudd. The site offered protction for the port of Härnösand and a navy depot in Gustavsvik.
The battery ws entirely underground in a secure bunker; it held three 7.5cm guns and a mine control station, linked by tunnels cut intio the granite rock. Accommodation for 112 men was also included, with dormitories, kichen, mess halls and showers.
Now decommissioned, the site can be visted by arrangement with the local group that supports the site. Subterranea Britannica members have also stayed overnight in the original accommodation which is a truly memorable experience.
