The immense underground complex south of Halberstadt was originally built by slave labour in World War II. Its purpose was to be an underground factory for aircraft parts, codenamed Malachit (Malachite). Thousands of concentration camp prisoners died during construction.
In the Cold War, the complex was expanded and used as an ammunition and equipment store for the East German Army (NVA). With the reunification of Germany the site was briefly used in the 1990s as a store for the Luftwaffe. Today the site is privately owned.
Sub Brit members have made many visits to the site over the years and a comprehensive history and description of the site (including plans) can be found in Subterranea issue 27.
