Two levels below 114 Oxford Road in Reading remained a series of arches and vaulted ceilings, the space was originally part of Crypt which connected into the neighbouring building which is Holy Trinity Church by a narrow tunnel.
The tunnel went off in two directions one directly into the church’s crypt situated in the basement and the other one towards Reading town centre. The excavations had been chalk pits which were converted to a new use for burial in the late 17th century.
The space was later on used in as an air raid shelter during the second world war, with capacity for several hundred people.
In 2017 planning was approved for the demolition of the Richer Sound Building and basements. The site was demolished and now has flats built on site.
