On a low mound in a rectangular compound on Hough Hill 50 yards North of Denham Lane (half way between trig station and road)
LOCKED Some of the compound fencing remains in place. All surface features remain intact with the grey paint flaking badly. The ventilation shaft. The ventilation shaft has deteriorated since the 1999 visit with part of the top and one side missing with one louvers hanging off and the other missing, The access shaft was reconstructed about 1989 and a new hatch (Torlift) fitted. The hatch is locked but as there is no security plug it can be opened with a large screwdriver. A metal dome on the ventilation shaft and three guying points nearby indicates that this was a master post. The louvres on the access shaft are also missing and the FSM pipe is unusually thick. Internally much remains including the table, shelf, cupboard, two low racks of Dexion shelving, BPI mount, BT junction boxes and wiring, coax cable for radio, air pipe for pump up mast, copper earth straps along two walls, fire blanket box (detached), Dexion shelving in the toilet recess, tool board and the battery switching box. There is a notice on the monitoring room door, which reads ‘beware slippery floor’. When visited in 2007 there had been some further deterioration with grafitti on the side of the access shaft and the concrete slab forming the step has been removed. Some fence posts and other rubbish have been thrown down the shaft.
BF November 2009 Update on Brinscall ROC cold war bunker (Lancashire). Afraid our repeated attempts to secure this bunker have not been very successful until recently due to continued and very determined vandalism. (Lock first damaged, then removed completely. Hatch closed off with metal straps and stone block but still accessed and damaged having been used by youths for drinking and possible drug use. Inside now blackened by candle smoke, rubbish left inside and dangerous concrete and metal dropped down shaft. Surface ventilator shaft further damage. Main shaft has now been welded closed to make safe. Sorry we were unable to do more but hopefully bunker is now safe and at least preserved despite circumstances.
December 2018: Post is being restored but had been subject to more vandalism. The GZI Ventilator Shaft is now gone.
Opened in 1962 and closed in 1991.
