A small shelter, built in 1939 for London Underground staff. This is located at the northern end of the southbound platform and is visible from the platform. A short pathway leads down some steps to a wooden door (a modern replacement of the original metal door).
The shelter is partially buried and constructed from concrete with additional earth over the roof. It is a single room, approximately 4m x 7m with an emergency exit hatch and tunnel in the opposite corner to the main door.
It is very simple, with basic overhead lighting and no internal structures. The interior clearly shows the impressions of the wooden formers used during construction. It was used post-war by the permanent way teams for storage and is still used occasionally. It contains mostly old rusted equipment, tools and track fittings. As a result there is no evidence of its original fittings when it was used as a shelter.
There is a slightly larger shelter that was built for use by both staff and public at Ealing Common station. This is accessed also from the southbound platform but behind the wall at the southern end of the platform and is neither visible nor accessible. It uses similar construction techniques, but is mostly empty.
Visited as permission visits through the Branch Line Society and TFL.
