Ritual Wells are known from prehistory and were prominent in Roman and later Christian civilisation. St Warna’s Well is the only surviving example on the Isles of Scilly. The well is located in a large natural hollow and the natural water source has been enclosed with a stone surround, from where steps lead down to the water source.
Tradition has it that pins were left in the well to try and secure safe passage for boats, although legend also has it that bent pins were sometimes left so that residents might benefit from the spoils of shipwrecks.
The site is a Scheduled Ancient Monument
