St Aubin Railway Tunnel is a63 metre long disused tunnel on the former line between St Helier and Corbiere. It was opened in 1898 as an improvement to the line, which used narrow (3 foot 6 inches) gauge. The line closed in 1936.
In World War II, the line was relaid at metrre gauge and used by the occupying Germans for the storage of fuel and munitions. Side galleries were at 90 degrees to the main bore of the tunnel and these in turn were laid with 60cm track. A stairway leads from within the complex up to an emergency exit and observation post. It was designated Hohlgangsanlage (“cave passage installation”) number 5 or Ho5.
At the time of visiting part of the tunnels was used (unexpectedly!) as the training site for Jersey’s bobsleigh team. Today the railway forms a pedestrian route which runs across the whole of the route.
