This is very interesting. When we visited we had no idea where the post was as it’s not listed in Attack Warning Red which includes a gazetteer of underground posts but a small number are missing. Neville Cullingford (ROC museum) told me of it’s existence at the castle. We paid to go in and look round and found nothing. From the photos it was a few inches below the surface.
It’s rare for posts to be completely demolished as that would be expensive to achieve. Usual practice was to demolish the parts above ground and push them down the shaft and cover over. Sometimes the roof was broken up.
I remember visiting the Enfield post where this had probably happened. The farmer knew nothing about the bunker and I showed him exactly where it had been. A week later I got a phone call from him saying he had dug it open with his JCB and he invited me back to look.
Surface features demolished in 1969 and the bunker buried, however, the underground structure was rediscovered in 2026 - however it’s badly flooded.
English Heritage uncovers lost Cold War bunker at Scarborough Castle
I visited Scarborough Castle yesterday (Friday 27th March) hoping it might be possible to see what’s been uncovered. Unfortunately English Heritage have (for now) covered it back up again - all that can be seen is some areas of loose/replaced turf.
