Munich Central Station is home to two civilian shelters.
The first is accessed from one of the public toilets, with another entrance on the public concourse. It would accommodate a few hundred people and was used post-war as accommodation for immigrant workers. Many of these were of Italian descent and so the area became known as ‘Little Italy’.
The second shelter is larger and dates from the Cold War. The underground car park at the station had provision for conversion into a dormitory for up to 3,000 people. Electrically operated blast doors would have isolated the shelter and basic catering facilities were provided.
