Lullingstone’s Ice House was built in the 1730s by the River Darent in the grounds of Lullingstone Castle (which can be visited in summer). It was filled with ice from the nearby lake and used to store fish and venison from the nearby Deer Park, now a golf course.
It is 20 feet deep and now used as a bat roost by bats like Natterers and Daubentons. It was excavated by the Kent Underground Research Group in 2019 who published a report on their work.
