The Metro system around Lille was the first driverless system in Europe and at one time the largest in the world. It is known as the VAL (véhicule automatique léger) which translates as light automated vehicle system. There are two lines in operation which intersect at two points - Gare Lille Flandres and Porte des Postes.
On a Sub Brit visit in 2005 we were given a tour of the impressive control centre which despatches trains at an up-to 66 second frequency. We then took a hosted tour over part of the network which included our host demonstrating the mannual controls for use in emergencies and during maintenance.
