As well as becks/rivers which have been covered over in the years, Leeds City Centre also has a underground Victorian/Edwardian utility network.
Built in the early 1900s to carry utility instead of continual breaking up the surface of streets to maintain water pipes, gas pipes, electrical cables & telephone cables.
The subways connect to other utility subways via a corridor.
Similar utility subways were built beneath London, Nottingham, St Helens & Birmingham.
Ths subways beneath Leeds were built at 7ft high and 8ft wide with water pipes and gas pipes on one side and electrical/telephone cables on racks on both sides.
