Kyre Park is a privately owned water garden estate SE of Tenbury Wells, Worcestershire and designed by Capability Brown. Despite its beauty, along with the surrounding area, It is not well known.
The grounds are currently mostly open to the public, however this is at the discretion of the owners and the house with interesting architecture is not. The park includes a number of features and the map, available by the car park with honesty box, shows these.
On its northern side is one of a number of a follies; there is just the one underground structure/tunnel of relevance to Subbrit. This appears to have been refurbished relatively recently as I do not recall access on my first visit in 2002 though I feel it had been by 2022.
It is in good condition with lighting from two small roof lights along its length. The interior has various reliefs inside and nooks.
These are in excellent condition and may be modern replacements for originals. The length is perhaps 30m in total, dry and well floored. There is a ‘green man’ above one entrance; the other is beneath a small ornamental ‘turret’.Both are sill impressive. I would imagine that originally it would have been damper, greener and appeared more frightening. Currently it feels very safe.
Internet research by myself has so far not revealed any original photos or details although these must exist.Kyre Park House and grounds had various uses over the previous uses over the previous 80 years - and there must be many photographs. These do not appear to be in general circulation and I have been unable to locate any previous ones of the tunnel and folly.
