Hampshire Chronicle Letter: Kings Worthy memories of Royal Observer Exhibition
I can vividly remember, as a child growing up in the area, watching two men climbing out of the ground. One looked quite smart, the other had a boiler suit.
We were on our bikes, standing (probably blocking) a junction on Lovedon Lane. They looked at us, we looked at them, they spoke briefly between themselves. After making sure the manhole they had just climbed out of was securely locked, they jumped in a car and headed off in the direction of the A33.
We were fascinated! Asked the local policeman what it was, but got nothing. We now realise - we watched it being decommissioned in 1991!
It now doesn’t exist. Don’t know if it’s been filled in, or just covered over - but no visible signs at ground level.
