Hay’s Level tunnels are named after Lt Col RA Hay of the Royal Engineers, who constructed the tunnels between 1940 and 1943. Built primarily for accommodation, storage and power generation, the tunnels are part of the immense underground complex within the Rock of Gibraltar.
The tunnels have numerous side chambers leading off, many of which originally held Nissen huts. Hay’s Level intersects with many other parts of the network and at its extremity one can emerge onto Jock’s Balcony for exceptional views of the town and airport below. Situated within a nature reserve, the tunnels are now open for public tours, branded as the World War II Tunnels
