Crumlin Road Gaol is a typical Victorian prison, built in 1845. It has four wings, each of four storeys with a total of 550 cells. The prison was in use until 1996. To provide a secure route for prisoners to be taken to the Crumlin Road Courthouse opposite, a tunnel was built so the transfer could be made out of sight.
Today the building is run as a visitor attraction and tours are available which include the tunnel as well as the gaol itself.
