The Clifford Road Air Raid Shelter Tunnels in Ipswich form a significant World War II civilian defence structure, constructed beneath the playground of Clifford Road Primary School. Built between 1939 and 1940, the shelter comprises a network of reinforced concrete tunnels designed to protect children and school staff during air raids. Featuring multiple entrances, blast walls, and original wartime fittings, the tunnels remain largely intact and offer a rare glimpse into life on the home front.
Rediscovered in the 1980s and now partially restored, the site is open for schools educational visits and several times per year to the public for guided tours, serving as both a historical education centre and a poignant memorial to civilian resilience during the Blitz.
Recently, two larger adjacent shelters have been discovered and unsealed after 80 years.
