Bruniquel Cave represents the earliest recorded use of subterranean space by humans. Discovered in 1990, the natural limestone cave consists of a long passage with wider areas within. As well as the remains of bear hibernation, some of the stalagmites have been dislodged and reformed into two circular structures. In addition there is evidence of burnt bone.
Results from Uranium Series Dating show these structures to have been created an astounding 176,500 years ago. At this time only early Neanderthals were present in the area so they must have been the constructors. The cave is not accessible and the location shown is approximate to discourage unauthorised exploration.
