Beneath Copenhagen’s Christiansborg Palace (Denmark’s Parliament building) lie the remains of a much earlier structure - Absalon’s Castle. This structure dates from the 12th century and is named after the Bishop who oversaw its construction. The remains were rediscovered during building work on the current Christianborg Palace at the beginning of the 20th century and such was the interest generated that the remains were protected by a concrete cap. The underground void also includes remains from the later Christiansborg Castle which dates from the 14th century. The fascinating remains of both structures can be visited
