Notes: Notes: Crown Street was the original western passenger
terminus of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway the world's
first railway to cater for passengers as one of its primary
functions. It was also arguably the worlds first inter city
railway.
Crown Street was situated at the end of a single track tunnel
that led up to the station from Edge Hill. Locomotives only
went as far as Edge Hill to an engine transfer point, the site
of the famous Moorish Arch and also the point at which the Wapping
Tunnel, which led down to the docks, started. Coaches were cable
worked up to Crown Street and proceeded by gravity from the
Station down to Edge Hill.
Such was the monumental success of the Liverpool and Manchester
Railway the Crown Street passenger terminus soon proved inadequate
due to its size and distance from the city centre and it was
closed on 15th August 1836. A new terminus was opened at Lime
Street, much closer to the city centre.
The site which was connected to Edge Hill by a further Tunnel
in the 1840s became a Goods depot. It remained open as a rail
served coal depot until as recently as 1972. Today the site
is a landscaped public park, no sign of the original tunnel
that linked the station to Edge Hill which was built in 1829
remains. It is still there but buried at its western portal.
The later 1840s tunnel can still be seen at the top end of the
site close to the children's play area. It is still rail served
and is used as a head shunt for freight trains that arrive at
Edge Hill
