Notes: Edge Lane Station was situated on the LNWR Canada Dock
Branch which ran from Edge Hill through the northern suburbs
of Liverpool to the Docks. The line opened to Canada Dock in
1866 for goods traffic. In 1870 a passenger service was extended
along the line from Tuebrook Station. On 5th September 1881
a branch was opened to Alexandra Dock which was also served
by passenger trains.
Edge Lane Station was located in a cutting on the south side
of the Edge Lane Bridge. It was accessed by ramps leading down
to the platforms from Street Level.
All of the stations on the line had closed by 31.5.1948 although
it continued to be used by Liverpool Lime Street - Southport
through coaches from and to London Euston. Latterly this service
was offered by a connecting DMU but when the Merseyrail Loop
and Link line opened in 1977 it was withdrawn.
Today all that remains are the two access gates from street
level which can be detected easily as they have been infilled
with a different coloured brick.
