Opatów grew up around an important crossroads and is also on the Opatówka River. Beneath the main square a large extent of gothic cellars used by merchants grew up, especially in the 16th and 17th centuries.
Today, many of them have been joined into a tourist route of around 400 metres which can be visited for a small admission fee.
