This is one of several quarries in the small village of Combe Down just outside Bath. This is a limestone quarry, worked in the 18th and 19th century for Bath Stone. The stone was used for many of the buildings in Bath as well as for other around the United Kingdom including Buckingham Palace.
Much of the surrounding quarried area was filled in with foamed concrete in the years 2204-2009 to stabilise the ground and protect the buildings above.
