Mangup Kale (Kale meaning Castle in Turkish) is an ancient fortress that lies on a plateau around 13 km east of Sevastopol. Over the years the settlement was known as Dory, Doros and Theodoro before it settled on Mangup.
Parts of the fortress date back to the 6th century when Christian Churches and cave settlements were also excavated. The site went through many changes with subsequent Greek and Ottoman settlement and was finally abandoned in the 18th century.
On the eastern finger of the plateau there are the remains of the Citadel, alongside subterranean churches, dungeons and former dwellings.
