A shelter was excavated in 1952 to act as emergency control centre for Lambeth Borough Council. It was contructed of asphalt lined concrete and a 2 feet reinforced concrete roof and 1 foot reinforced conrete outer walls. It was sited immediately adjacent to Lambeth Town Hall and had a ‘Ministry of Works Standard Hut Type 24’ installed above it.
It was 33 feet wide and 70 feet long and comprised of:
- Control and Map Room
- Message Room
- Liason Officers Room
- Messenger Room
- Canteen and Welfare area
- Separate dormitories and toilets for men and women
- Ventilation plant room
- Main entrance and emergency exit
It was eventually abandoned after the Cold War and was used for raves until it was filled in and a community orchard planted in the space above it.
