This magnificent chateau was constructed between the 11th and 19th centuries, and fortified since at least the 15th. It was built and occupied by the family of Dreux-Brézé, before being taken over by the Colbert family, descendants of the Minister of Louis XIV. Surrounded by immensely deep dry moats, the inside of the chateau is a warren of passages and chambers.
The underground spaces include dungeons, food storage and stables. There are also multiple wine presses, a bakery and even an ice well.
