On 1.11.1887 the Liverpool, Southport and Preston Junction Railway opened its line from Hillhouse Junction (on the CLC Aintree to Southport Lord Street Line) to Southport Central and services began to operate between Southport Central and Altcar and Hillhouse.

Meols Cop station opened on 2.9.1887 and served both lines. The line from Butts Lane Junction to Altcar & Hillhouse closed on 26.9.1938 but the line through Meols Cop is still open today as in 1965 the direct line from Pool Hey Junction to St. Lukes closed and trains from and to Wigan where diverted to run via the former Altcar line and a section of the former Southport to Preston line. Meols Cop Station remained open and is served by Wigan and Southport trains today; freight services were however withdrawn on 27.11.1967.
