At some time it was known as Bridport Harbour. There was an ambitious plan hatched in 1995 to open a narrow gauge railway between Crewkerne - Portland passing through West Bay. The Brit Valley Railway was to be built in 3 phases, Phase 1 being a line from Bridport - West Bay. Their business plan was completed in April 2001 but since then there have been nor further reported developments.
