WAPPING TUNNEL

Gallery 2 - 1974 to 1998

Looking east from the Jamaica Street cutting in 1974. Prior to 1895 there was no cutting at this location and the Wapping tunnel continued westwards. The creation of the cutting cut the 1829 Wapping tunnel into two unequal parts. In the view is the ‘new’ western portal of the longer section of the 1829 Wapping tunnel. To the left can be seen the Wapping signal box that opened in 1896.

At the eastern end of the Wapping tunnel there is a small cross passage that links into the Crown Street tunnel. It is seen here in 1998.
