The A35
originally ran through a narrow road tunnel under Thistle Hill,
three miles north of Lyme Regis in Dorset. When the road was improved
during the 1980's, a new cutting was excavated a few yards to
the south west, doing away with the need for a tunnel.
The old road alignment was abandoned although the tunnel still
exists and is open at both ends with dumped soil at one end to
stop cars driving through it.
|
The current explorer (1:25,000) map clearly shows
the old road alignment and tunnel
|
Please note: Access to the tunnel is from the western end only as the
eastern end opens into a garden.
