A semi sunken air raid shelter stands in a wooded garden at the rear of a private house on the east side of Lowfield Heath Road, Charlwood. The property backs on to Gatwick Airport. During WW2 the RAF took over control of the airport with RAF Gatwick in the Kenley Sector of No. 11 Group Fighter Command. The air raid shelter dates from this period.

Photo by Nick Catford The air raid sheleter is of brick construction with a concrete roof.
Internally the walls are plastered and there are wooden beams beneath
the concrete roof, some of these have now rotted and fallen away. There
are two sunken entrances, one on either side. The shelter is completely
empty apart from some electrical fittings and is flooded to a depth
of two feet.
