Site Name: Shrewsbury AFHQ9

RSG site visit 11th February 2003

Armed Forces HQ (AFHQ) 9 is located in the Keep of Copthorne Barracks in Shrewsbury. The Barracks are home to 5th Division Military Intelligence West Midlands Brigade, 143 West Midlands Brigade, Shropshire and Herefordshire Light Infantry and a cadet unit. The three level Cardwell Keep is a typical 19th Century barracks keep, many similar examples being found around the country.

The AFHQ was established there in 1990 and is still referred to as AFHQ 9. Military Intelligence occupy the middle floor and the high security top floor houses a communications centre. AFHQ9 is responsible for the whole of the Army in the West Midlands, South West and Wales.
