Shrewsbury: ROC Group HQ No 16
OS Grid Ref: SJ499126
Date protected accommodation opened: 13.1.1962
Date closed: 1992
Location: Holywell Street, Shrewsbury.
Description: Surface blockhouse with purpose built administration block alongside.
The Abbey Veterinary Centre now uses the front part of the blockhouse and windows
have been installed at the front. It is clad in brick, similar to Winchester.
A new 2-storey office block (Observer House) has been built at the rear butting
on to the blockhouse, it is uncertain if there is access from this building through
the emergency exit of the blockhouse. Internally the building has been split into
two with walls built across the main corridor beyond the officers room and
the access from the control room to the BT equipment room has been blocked. The
balcony has been floored over. All the plant has been stripped out, as have the
original toilets. There is a cabinet in the vets waiting room containing
ROC memorabilia including photographs, badges, ROC crest, radiation detectors
etc.
