Site Name: Guernsey - St. Martin Monitoring Post
off Jerbourg Road
St. Martin
OS Grid Ref: WV33757516
RSG site visit 16th August 2002
The monitoring post is located on the north side of an un-named minor road,
50 yards west of the Doyle Monument on Jerbourg Road, alongside a cellphone mast.
It utilises a former personnel shelter for one of the 22cm guns of the Strassburg
Coastal Battery (the open gun pit is still extant nearby). The bunker is overgrown
and semi-sunken and is accessed down a flight of steps on the north side.
The bunker has three rooms, an entrance lobby which opens into the 15' X 16'
monitoring room (originally the German crew room). At the back of the monitoring
room is a small kitchen (a second, smaller crew room). There was originally an
escape shaft from the main room but this has now been blocked.
The monitoring room has a central table and chairs for the crew. There is a
long table along one wall with shelves above it. There are telephones, a radio
and the automatic monitoring instrument. This is a Mini Instruments 7-40, measuring
temperature, wind speed, wind direction and radiation levels from sensors and
detectors mounted on the roof. This data is then relayed to CD
HQ at La Corbinerie. There is a large map cabinet on one side of the room
and various maps around the walls. There is a single folding bed and a desk. In
one corner of the bunker is the Erickson cellphone equipment.
The kitchen has two microwave ovens and a food preparation surface. The bunker
is connected to the mains electricity supply.
Those taking part in the visit were Nick
Catford, Keith Ward and Robin
Cherry
