|Post Name||PORTLAND BILL|
|OS Grid Reference||SY68087119|
|Date opened||August 1960|
|Date closed||September 1991|
|Location||In 1997 the post was in a square compound in the south west corner of a playground at the end of Grangecroft Road and on the north side of a public footpath. By 2002 the compound fencing has been removed.|
|Description||LOCKED All surface features remain intact. The top of the access shaft has been reconstructed and a new larger hatch (Torlift) fitted. The post was in a slight depression; since 2003 this depression has been filled up to the level of the surrounding land. The top of the ventilation shaft and the top of the access shaft are still visible protruding a few inches above the surrounding land. The hatch was welded shut when inspected in 1997 but the welds have now been ground off and the hatch can be opened with a Torlift key. The security plug is however badly worn and is difficult to extract. Internally the following items remain: table, shelf, cupboard, shelf by door, two shelves in toilet recess, small rack of shelves on the wall above the cupboard, BPI mount, FSM pipe blanking plate, BT junction boxes and wiring, 2 waste bins, small splint, candle holder, two lights, cluster map and two posters.
2007 (received from Sean Young) Portland will shortly have the air vents and entrance way cut down and the post used as an overflow water storage tank, the site has been cleared up and leveled for drainage work. The landowner spent £800 on a confined space entry team to investigate what it was!
