Toton was once the site of one of the largest marshalling yards in Europe. During World War II an air-raid shelter was built for railway workers. It features a pre-cast stepped concrete entrance leading to a single tunnel with an escape hatch at the far end.
The entrance design has echoes of 1930s expressionist architecture and the sectionss were most likely pre-cast at the nearby Stanton ironworks. The same design of shelter was used elsewhere on the LMS Network.
