The shelters have been here since the opening of RAF Madley (1941), they are primarily of concrete and brick construction, the southernmost shelter has been home to someone in the past.
There used to be a metal frame just in through the gate which has been speculated to be many things including a plinth on which an air raid siren would have been attached, other theories suggest that it may have been part of a water pumping windmill, as there was a brick structure next to it before the frame, the brick structure (probably a water tank or water tank mount) and northernmost shelter were demolished, the northernmost shelter was demolished because it had developed a hole in the roof which had become dangerous.
There were (until demolished) a set of changing rooms and toilets on site, these have been demolished for a good many years now, but remains of the foundations and sewage lines can still be seen. The site was built at the same time as the Airfield at Madley.
