Pankstrasse (Pankstraße) station is located on the Berlin’s U8 line. It was opened on 5 October 1977 when the line was extended northwards from Gesundbrunnen.
During construction, a Cold-War bunker to protect civilians was incorporated into its design. Beyond the platform at one end are decontaminatioin and ventilation/filtration plant and other services. At the other end are dormitories and other facilities for occupants. The design capacity was for 3,339 people to be sheltered for up to 14 days.
In the event of activation, gas-tight doors would have been closed in the running tunnels at each end of the platform. This would only be done only after two trains were parked at the platforms to provide additional seating. Siemensdamm station on line U7 had a similar ‘multi-purpose’ function.
Tours of the station and its Cold War facilities are run by Berliner Unterwelten, including some in English, and are thoroughly recommended.
