The Jersey War Tunnels were designated Hohlgangsanlage 8 by the Germans and originally intended as an ammunition store and undergound barracks for the occupying infantry. In 1943 the intended purpoase was changed to that of an underground hospital. Over a kilometre of tunnels was excavated but the complex was never completed.
As early as 1946 saw the tunnels opened to tourists and today the complex houses extensive displays, cataloguing the history of the German occupation of the Channel Islands and aspects of military and civilian life on Jersey during the war.
