In World War II, a civilian air-raid shelter was built in Blochplatz, in the north of Berlin. In the 1980s, during the Cold War it was modernised and repurposed as a bunker for the residents of West Berlin. Over 1,300 people could have been accommodated for up to 48 hours. The bunker survives largely intact, including the still-working ventilation system.
Today, tours of the site are given by Berliner Unterwelten - a local not-for-profit society which preserves much of Berlin’s subterranean heritage. Part of the structure is also used as performance space by a local theatre group.
