The Abris (Bunker) of Hatten is a fortified, semi-sunken bunker built about a kilometre behind the Maginot Line. It was built as a protected barracks to house 240 soldiers in the early 1930s.
Today it is open as a museum with the underground rooms housing display material and scale models. There is a particular focus on the Battle of Hatten-Rittershoffen in January 1945 which was part of Operation Nordwind - Hitler’s last offensive on the Western Front. This was one of the fiercest tank battles in France, which killed 114 civilians alongside military casualties.
