Abbeywood was the site of a Royal Artillery Anti-Aircraft Operations Room (AAOR), covering the Barrow anti-aircraft zone, and was built in the early 1950s to a standard design. It was the Barrow Borough Council emergency center until the 1980’s. It was in a heavily wooded area on the site of the Abbots Wood mansion, built for Sir James Ramsden, one of Barrow’s founding fathers, and one time chairman and major shareholder of the Furness Railway Company. The bunker was opened to the public on several occasions, and was demolished in the late 1980’s.
