Notes: Wrexham Central opened as an extension to the Wrexham Mold and Connah's Quay Railway (WMCQ) which had its original terminus next to the towns GWR Wrexham General Station. The original terminus became Wrexham Exchange. The new station was ideally situated right in the heart of the town of Wrexham and so it proved popular with the residents of the town.
Wrexham Central became a through station on 2.11.1895 when the Cambrian Railway opened its Wrexham to Ellesmere line. Central grew in size and had two bay and two through platforms.
In 1897 the WMCQ Railway was amalgamated into the Great Central Railway.

From the late 1890's and right the way through to 1960 services operated to Chester Northgate, Seacombe and Ellesmere. In 1960 the Seacombe service was diverted for the last couple of miles of its route to run to New Brighton. This service was further cut back to Bidston later in the decade and it remains in operation to this day.

In 8.09.1962 the Ellesmere line closed and the station reverted to being a terminus although goods services did continue to operate through the station towards the east until May 1981. In 1968 services to Chester Northgate ceased. On 20.4.1969 Central became an unstaffed halt.
A period of decline then set in and in the 1970's Central became a basic station at the end of a single track branch with only one platform, the former platform 3, kept in use. The former bay platforms were filled in at this time. Facilities consisted of a simple shelter but it remained convenient for the town centre.

In the 1990's proposals were put forward to develop the site of the station as a shopping area and to relocate it further to the west. Despite opposition as passengers would have to walk further to the town centre the proposals where eventually carried out and a new Wrexham Central opened 400 yards to the west in 1998. It is far superior to the facilities that passengers had endured from the 1960's through to the original stations closure.
