Notes: The 2 3/4 mile line between South Shields and Marsden
was opened to mineral traffic in May 1879. A passenger service
was added from 19th March 1888 primarily for the workforce from
Whitburn Colliery, Marsden. As the railway was owned by the colliery,
ownership passed to the National Coal Board after nationalisation
of the coal industry on 31.12.1946. The line to Westoe Colliery
was electrified (overhead) in 1953 with the new electric trains
looping past Westoe Lane Station, however the passenger service
was withdrawn the same year. In 1954 the line through the station
was also electrified. Following the closure of Harton & Whitburn
Collieries on 7th June 1968 much of the Marsden Railway as it
was usually know was abandoned, however the line through Westoe
Lane Station remained in use until 1993 when Westoe Colliery closed.
The last remaining section of track was lifted in 1994.
When opened in 1888 the Station was called South Shields. In
1900 the station was completely rebuilt and renamed Westoe Lane.
