Notes: The first Waverton station was situated on the Grand Junction Railway (GJR) Chester branch which opened on 1 October 1840. The line provided a link between the important county town of Chester and the GJR main line at Crewe. Five intermediate stations were provided including Waverton which opened as Black Dog. It was renamed as Waverton within a few years of opening.

The station was located on the east side of the Chester – Whitchurch road (the present day A49). The line was a double track railway and the station had two platforms. It had buildings on both sides of the line. Access was via sloping paths that connected the platforms to the road.

At the time of opening the station would have been served by GJR trains running between Birmingham and Chester and points in-between. There would also have been through coaches to Birkenhead via the Chester & Birkenhead Railway.

On 16 July1846 the GJR merged with other companies to form the London & North Western Railway (LNWR).

By 18 March 1850 the Chester & Holyhead Railway (C&H) had opened a line that linked its two namesakes. The Crewe and Chester line became part of a main line trunk route that linked London with Holyhead and via steamship with Dublin.

The March 1850 timetable showed 4 up and 3 down trains Monday-to-Saturday. There were no trains on Sundays. .

The December 1895 timetable showed 4 up trains Tuesday-to-Saturday and 5 on Mondays. There were 5 down trains Monday-to-Saturday. On Sundays there were 2 up and 1 down trains.

The seat of the Duke of Westminster was at nearby Grosvenor Park. The Duke felt that the facilities at Waverton station were inadequate for his needs and he had a more substantial station built 41 chains to the west. The new station opened on 6 June 1898 and the original was closed.

After closure the station was demolished leaving no trace. The only evidence that there had been a station is the bricked up entrance that once gave access to the down platform (Chester direction).
