Notes: Stockport Tiviot Dale was opened by the Cheshire Lines
Committee (CLC) on the 1.12.1865. (The station was originally
known as Stockport Teviot Dale.) It was located on the CLC Woodley
to Skelton Junction section of what became the Woodley to Glazebrook
line.
 |
To the west the line gave access towards Liverpool
via the Skelton Junction to Garston line. However this became
part of the LNWR who were anything but helpful towards the
CLC. |
The CLC therefore decided to progress towards building a route
of their own from Skelton Junction to Liverpool. This they did
and it opened to goods on 1.3.1873. The opening of this route
completed the Stockport to Glazebrook line.
Tiviot Dale remained a part of the CLC until 1948 when it became
part of the British Railways London Midland Region. In 1964 it
lost its local services towards Liverpool Central. It still catered
for main line services and local runs to Manchester Central but
closed completely on 2.1.1967.
The M60 runs parallel with the line. The line of the railway
was retained during the building of the motorway as there were
proposals to reopen the line.
The Bredbury to Heaton Mersey section of the Chorlton - Bredbury
line (throuigh Tiviot Dale) remained open to freight, mainly to
allow trains from the Woodhead line to travel on to Liverpool
via Northenden. This section itself was closed in 1982 due to
damage caused to a tunnel in Stockport when the M63 (Now M60)
was built. The track was lifted in 1986 and Tiviot Dale tunnel
is now been partially filled with earth and rubble. There are
plans are in hand to build a Metrolink line from Chorlton to Stockport
using part of the trackbed.
